Dr. Lawrence Kofi Acheampong, the Chief Coordinator of the African Correctional Healthcare Network (ACHN) and the Medical Director of the Ghana Prisons Service, received a special invitation to serve as a keynote speaker at the prestigious International Criminal Court (ICC) Seminar on Medical Matters in Detention. The event was held in The Hague, Netherlands, from 19th to 20th September 2024.
As a distinguished Forensic Physician and Researcher, Dr. Acheampong delivered a presentation focusing on Multi and Transcultural Medicine, Treatment, Care, and Communication with an emphasis on vulnerable detainees.
His insightful discourse addressed the importance of integrating cultural sensitivity into healthcare practices in correctional settings, ensuring that detainees’ diverse backgrounds are respected and considered in their medical treatment.

Dr. Acheampong led a thought-provoking discussion, responding to questions from a diverse group of experts representing various continents. His expertise highlighted the African perspective in forensic healthcare, advocating for best practices in medical treatment for the incarcerated population.
In particular, he championed the integration of multidisciplinary approaches in correctional healthcare, promoting collaboration between medical professionals, social workers, psychologists, and correctional officers to ensure holistic care for detainees. He further articulated the critical need for collaboration between detainees,
Legal counsel, prison directors, medical officers and Forensic experts to ensure comprehensive care and Justice within Secure, Dention and Custody Centers. Through his participation, Dr. Acheampong effectively represented the African voice on a global platform, reinforcing the importance of culturally competent care and evidence-based medical practices in forensic and correctional settings.
